Quantum dots (QDs) are tiny clusters of semiconductor material with dimensions of only a few nanometers. These nanostructures are often called ‘artificial atoms', because the charge carriers can only occupy a restricted set of energy levels, just like the electrons in an atom. When a QD laser was first proposed, the main motivation was to have a low threshold and temperature-insensitive laser. QD laser specialist Innolume GmbH based in Dortmund and Santa Clara, CA, USA moves QD lasers to production environment and enables real commercial applications in medical markets and ramping up production for telecommunication.
