In 1999, institute members and equipment move into the new building of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (MPI) on the Science and Technology Campus Dortmund, Otto-Hahn-Straße 11. Six years later, in the immediate vicinity of the MPI, the second construction phase of the Biomedicine Centre Dortmund is opened in May 2005. Photos: Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology
Today, work at the Institute follows the guiding principle "From molecule to human": using a holistic approach, an international team of scientists from over 30 nations researches the fundamental physical and biochemical processes in cells (physiology) at the molecular level.
A total of around 150 researchers work together at the MPI on an interdisciplinary basis. The spectrum of topics ranges from investigating the mechanisms that control cell growth, muscle movement and the transmission of signals to research into the causes of cancer.
The researchers are developing substances that can be used to specifically influence cellular processes in the organism and from which new active ingredients for medicine may be created.
The Compound Management and Screening Center (COMAS) of the MPI works at the Biomedicine Centre Dortmund. This central substance library of the Max Planck Society currently contains over 240,000 small molecules.
